Undersecretary Screwtape writes a series of letters to his nephew and junior tempter Wormwood concerning Wormwood's unnamed charge. After the second letter, the "patient" becomes a Christian, but Screwtape continues to encourage, enjoin, and embarrass Wormwood into tempting him toward damnation. Since the letters are written from a demon's perspective, "Our Father" refers to Satan, and "the Enemy" refers to God. Screwtape covers a diversity of topics as different categories and areas of potential attack Wormwood should use against his patient, including sex, church-hopping, gluttony, historical perspectives, World War 2, and cowardice. Eventually, the patient falls in love with a Christian girl, which Screwtape tries to have Wormwood use against both of them, though it does not succeed in any substantial way. Though Wormwood tries to use some of Screwtape's letters and comments against him in the diabolical "lowerarchy" (as Screwtape calls it), Screwtape foils his nephew's schemes. The last letter reveals the patient is killed during WW2, which Screwtape considers the ultimate failure by Wormwood.
